The Forbidden City, which is also known as the Palace Museum, is located in the centre of Beijing. For almost five centuries, it served as the home of the emperor and his household, and the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government. The Forbidden City was built in the 15th century, the complex consists of nearly a thousand buildings and covers 720,000 square metres. The palace complex exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture, and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City is listed as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. The design of the Forbidden City, from its overall layout to the smallest detail, is meticulously planned to reflect philosophical and religious principles, and above all to symbolise the majesty of imperial power. For example, yellow is the colour of the emperor. Thus almost all roofs in the Forbidden City bear yellow glazed tiles. The Forbidden City is the first recommended place that travellers should visit in Beijing.
