长城英语介绍

A: Here we are on the Great Wall, ladies and gentlemen. It is a landmark which symbolizes China.

B: It must be pretty old. I've heard of Qin Shihuang. Is he the man who had different sections of the walls linked up?

A:That's right. And the Great Wall stretches more than 5 000 kilometers.

B: Walls are usually viewed as a defense project. What are the key parts of the Great Wall?

A: It consists of three parts: the military passes, the walls and the beacon towers. Military passes such as Juyong Pass, the one we are visiting today, are located at important sections of the Great Wall. The beacon towers were used specifically for transmitting military information. Soldiers used smoke in the daytime and fire at night to deliver the message.

B: Lin, I found there are holes both outside and inside the wall.What's their function?

A: They were supposed to drain off water.

B:长城一定很古老，我曾听说过秦始皇。是不是他让人把城墙各个部分连接起来的？

A:对，接起来的长城有5000多公里长。

B:城墙一般被看成防御工程，它有哪些重要部分呢？

A:长城由三部分构成：军事关卡，城墙和烽火台。军事关卡位于长城的关键地段。比如我们今天参观的居庸关就是一例。烽火台是特别用来报警的。士兵们在白天用烽烟，夜间用篝火传递消息。

B:小林，我发现城墙里面和外面都有小窟窿，它们起什么作用？

A:应该是排水用的。
