A: Hi, Fang. What are you doing next weekend?
B: Nothing special. I don't have any plans yet.
A: Don't you know it's Thanksgiving?
B: No. I've heard about Thanksgiving, but I don't know very much about it.
A: In the States we celebrate it on the fourth Thursday in November. In Canada, they celebrate it on the second Monday in October.
B: Is it an important holiday?
A: Yes , it is. It's a special time when friends and family get together and share a meal. The meal usually include roast turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, squash, and
other vegetables, and pumpkin and apple pies.
B: Wow ! That sounds like a feast !
A: It is.
B : But how did the tradition get started !
A : The first Thanksgiving was in 1621. That was one year after the pilgrims from England arrived in the New World. They suffered a great deal at first and half of them died during the first winter.
Those who survived managed to get a harvest from the land with the help of friendly Indians. Just then another ship arrived with more people. To celebrate their arrival and the harvest, a feast was given to thank God and probably also their Indian friends.
B : So it's one of the oldest traditions in America, right?
A : Right. And during Thanksgiving many Americans enjoy watching football with their friends before or after the meal. Unfortunately the women get stuck with the cooking! We hope you'll come over to eat on Thanksgiving.
B :Thanks. I'll be sure to be good and hungry.
