George: How can I appreciate modern art? It leaves me cool.
Kathy: It would help if you followed the four steps of looking at modern art.
George: What should I do then?
Kathy: Step one is to identify the medium used in the work. Is it a drawing, a painting, an etching or a lithograph?
George: I think I can do that. I can tell the difference between an etching and a lithograph.
Kathy: Step two is to take an inventory of exactly what you see, the lines, the colors, the shapes and textures.
George: Well, I suppose I can do that, too.
Kathy: Step three is to think about the interpretation of the piece of art and what the lines, colors, shapes and textures might mean. After analyzing the work from a number of perspectives, you can make a judgment in step four.
George: Thank you for the lesson in art appreciation.
