A:What's your understanding of real success?

B: I think different things can mean success. Firstly. the individual should be enthusiastic about his or her career. He or she should feel a sense of reword as well as receive others'

recognition from what he or she does. Secondly. success can mean raising a lovely and happy family. Lastly.to find friends that share similar goals and interests is also considered success.

A:Do you think money equals to success?

B: I don't think it's that relevant. I reckon if someone feels passionate about his or her career and is persistent with his or her career goals.then he or she can get a promotion or win a prize. Money would just follow. However, real joy doesn't necessarily need money, especially if one gets a sense of reward or pride from what he or she does. Money can help you buy tangible things.but it cannot really make you happy.

A:How do you suggest that teachers should do to reward their students?

B: A feasible option is that teachers can give students that perform well in class with a special position, like the class event organizer. This way, this student can become a role model whilst building his or her confidence as well as leadership and social skills. Another idea is to have students vote on other better performing students to be granted an "Outstanding Student Award" during an award granting ceremony.

A:So how did it happen that you created Craigslist?

B:The effort started in 1994 when I was at CharlesSchwab, working then on overall securityarchitecture.

But I also saw people using the Internet and figuredit was going to be important eventually for anyonein the brokerage business.

So I started evangelizing that at Schwab.

While I was looking around at the Internet, I saw a lot of people helping each other out

and thought that I should do something, too.

So in 1995,I began to e-mail a bunch of friends about art and technical events in SanFrancisco.

Over the months that followed, people kept asking if I could add the occasional job posting andlistings for things to sell, too.

Then I said, “Let’s add apartment listings, too.”

It was all done through a very simple E-mail, a cc: list.

This is the sort of pattern we still have today

—people suggest stuff to us, we do what makes sense and then we ask for more feedback.

I left Schwab around the same time I began Craigslist.

Soon I went freelance and had a lot of fun, while working on Craigslist as a hobby.

Todd: We're talking about education and about, you know, people applying themselves andgiving grades and giving praise and stuff like that. Have you ever thought that maybe we,because we're both teachers, both of us are teachers, that maybe we put too much effort onjudging everybody and that maybe it's OK for kids to realise failure is not really a bad thing ormaybe quitting is not a bad thing?

Julia: Absolutely. Yeah, I think, I think all the emphasis should be put on the effort that peoplemake and yeah the failing or succeeding is kind of secondary to that.

Todd: Because it does seem that we push kids at all levels to get good grades, go to college, get that good job and that, that usually works out but in a lot of cases people find successbecause they fail, because they don't do well and that leads them to something else in life. So Iguess, I'm not saying don't try, just quit at everything, but that we have to just accept thatactually maybe quitting is not such a bad thing.

Julia: No, I don't think it is. No, I think you're working, that's all part of the learning process, working out what. I was lucky. I was given very good advice at school and I wasn't pushed toget good grades, I wasn't pushed to pursue a career. The advice I was given was do what youenjoy doing cos they're the things you'll be good at.

Todd: Yeah.

Julia: And that was great advice. I don't have a career but I'm happy.

Todd: There you go. There was a great quote the other day by someone in the paper aboutstarting your own business and the person said, you know, follow your passion and keep at itand the money will follow and I think that's pretty much the case for a lot of people that, youknow, that they find success.

Julia: There's that other famous quote about doing what makes you come alive. Don't askwhat the world needs, ask what makes you come alive because the world needs people who'vecome alive, meaning like pursue your passion and that will lead to success, whatever successmeans. It's the way we define success as well is also part of the problem.

Todd: True, true.

Julia: You know, high income, is that success? And in my book that's not what success is.Success is happiness.

Todd: So what is happiness?

Julia: Happiness is just contentment, absolute peace with the way you are right now and whatyou're doing right now. Not striving or yearning for things that are beyond your grasp.

Todd: Beyond your reach?

Julia: Yeah.

Todd: Yeah, that's good.
