一是动物身体变小,因为人类偏向捕猎大体积动物作为食物。比如鱼,当人们把大鱼捞走,小鱼能够留下来并且pass their genes to the next generation;

比如鱼,人们会把大鱼捕走,只有小鱼能存活下来,所以鱼就 pass their genes to the next generation,鱼就变小了。 比如 mice, mice 学会了在城市里生活和寻找食物,脑子聪明的会活下来,所以就 pass their genes to the next generation。

The professor talks about two ways how human activities affect animal evolution.

Firstly, it causes animals to grow smaller. This is because human tend to hunt those animals bigger in size as food source. Take fish as an example, when people caught huge number of big fish, smaller fish sustain and they are able to pass their genes to the next generation;

Secondly, animals began to have larger brain, since they have to adapt to changeable environment and survive. The professor then gives an example of mice, in order to survive in the city and search for food, mice evolve to be smarter, and only the smarter ones will survive and pass their gene to the next generation.

话题:dragonfly 是most effective predator

再说第二个方面是它脑中有个computing system,可以percept the speed of flying prey。

In the lecture, the professor talks about two reasons why the dragonfly is the most effective predator.

The first one is that compound eyes give them a broad field of vision. With the help of compound eyes, the dragonfly can clearly see preys flying from all directions, including in the very front so that no preys will be omitted.

The second one is that they have a computing system to predict the flying speed of the preys. This system is sophisticated enough to work out the speed the preys nearby travel at and the dragonfly can make adaption to capture them. For example, when approaching the dragonfly, the mosquitos’ path and speed will be worked out in a short time. And the dragonfly will take actions and the mosquitos have nowhere to hide and finally become meals of the dragonfly.

Termite mounds

The professor is talking about the benefits termite mounds can have to other animals and plants. Firstly, to animals, termite mounds can provide them perfect spots to observe surrounding environment. You know, termite mounds are always higher than the ground, so they can surely provide the height animals need when they are trying to see what is going on nearby. For example, it is being noticed that a certain kind of cat will use termite mounds as their watchtowers when they need to find food. The second benefit is brought to plants in the area, for which, termite mounds can let the rain get into the dirt. Here is a fact. In a desert, the plants are always more thriving in places with termite mounds, because the dirt in that area gets more water than other places. On the contrary, places with no termite mounds may probably have no plants.
